Jill Barber: Top 5 Things To Do in Halifax

Posted by Jennifer Van Evra on Oct 18, 2007
Just 2 days until CBC Radio 3's big showcase at the Halifax Pop Explosion! And we know you're all going to flock to the seaside city for the show, so we thought we'd ask some favourite east coast musicians for their Top 5 Things To Do In Halifax. Matt Mays gave us his yesterday.

Here are 5 favourite haunts from beloved Haligonian Jill Barber:

5. I would start my day with Halifax's best cup of fair trade, organic,
on-site roasted coffee at my local cafe, Trident Cafe & Booksellers. It's
also an excellent used bookstore.

4. My Saturday morning ritual always includes a visit to the Halifax Farmer's Market, located in the historic Keith's Brewery. I would go for a fruit smoothie from Steve-O-Reno's and a spelt cinnamon roll from Big Life.

3. For the friendliest service and spiciest dishes in Halifax, I would head
to one of my fave restaurants, The Hungry Chili, located on Blowers St. (just below our city's infamous "pizza corner.") I always order the same dish, Hot-Numbing Shrimp. Delish!

2. When the night falls, I would make my way over to one of Canada's most legendary rock clubs, Halifax's beloved Marquee for the CBC Radio 3 showcase featuring Miracle Fortress, Pride Tiger, Land of Talk, Mother Mother and Eric’s Trip.

1. Following the show, I would go for the mandatory night-cap at Tom's Little Havana, a smokeless cigar bar that boasts a fine selection of whiskey and is brimming with old port city charm.

More to come... but until then, do tell: What are your favourite places and things to do in Halifax?

    there's too many

there's a lot of great things to do in Halifax, but here's one:

if it's sunny, go for a walk in Point Pleasant Park. You might meet seals, and many, many cute red squirrels.

In fact, if you're in Point Pleasant saturday afternoon, look for a group of people in orange tshirts at the Young street entrance...They're there for the Guluwalk; join them, and you'll get to do something for a good cause AND go for a fun walk around the city!
Plus, you'll feel better about buying that 7th beer at the Marquee that night.

    Just an FYI

Living across the street and down a block from the great Trident Cafe and Bookshop I thought I should mention that their website is http://www.tridenthalifax.com/ which it seems is mostly borked anyway. I have a friend in BC who has called this the best bookstore in Canada. I can't argue with him and love how it's totally low-key.
