The CBC Radio 3 Player Is Now Embeddable

Posted by John Paolozzi on Aug 10, 2007
Hype is a dangerous tool. Remember how just before the Segway came out, the inventor was hyping like nobody's business, and everybody was expecting something along the lines of a jet-pack, rather than the souped up Rascal it turned out to be?

Well, I think I can safely say without any exaggeration, that our latest player upgrade is way cooler than the Segway. Way cooler.

Sure, the player may look the same, but it's what's new under the hood that counts. You can now add it to your Facebook, MySpace, or blog, and rig it to play your personal playlist, that of another user, all the songs on your favourite band's page, or even our web radio stream.

See what I mean? Kinda blows the Segway out of the water cool-wise, no?

We think it's kind of huge, because it means that you basically get to program CBC Radio 3, and broadcast it to whomever you please. All of our audio content - including individual songs, concerts, sessions, interviews, and other special features - is available for you to plug into your personal playlist.

I know you're rarin' to get started, so for instructions, please keep reading after the jump. If you don't have a playlist, or want to know more about how the player works, you should read our Media Player FAQ before taking another step.

And by all means... tell us what you think, and if you've posted it in your blog!

Adding the Player to MySpace and Blogs

First off, please note that the player is 250 pixels wide, so you may have to tweak your page to make it fit nice and snug.

To add the player to MySpace and other blogs, first make sure you are signed into CBC Radio 3, and in playlist mode. Begin playing the playlist you want to add to your site and then click on the button that says "embed" on the player. Copy the html and paste it into the appropriate space on MySpace or your blog.

If you want to add the player to run in radio mode (no playlist attached), here is the html you'll need to embed:

<object width="250" height="450"><param name="movie" value="http://radio3.cbc.ca/web-templates/flashplayer/R3_EmbededPlayer.swf"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param>

<embed xsrc="http://radio3.cbc.ca/web-templates/flashplayer/R3_EmbededPlayer.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="250" height="450" allowScriptAccess="always">

</embed></object>

I Want to Use Another User's Playlist. Can I Do This?

Of course! But keep in mind the chosen playlist will continue to evolve over time, as that person may change it at any time. To use someone else's playlist, you can browse the User Playlist section of the Radio 3 site, and choose whatever playlist you find in the 'Browse all Playlists' index. Same deal as before: launch the playlist in the player using the play button, and then click the permalink (for Facebook) or embed button (for MySpace or blogs) to get the html for your CBC Radio 3 Player.

I Want my Favourite Band to Play Instead, How Do I Set That Up?

First check to make sure your favourite band exists on New Music Canada. Once verified, go to their band page, and you will see a red link that says "play all tracks", just to the right of the band's name and city. Click on the link, and the band's tracks should start playing. You can then go to the media player, and click the permalink (for Facebook) or embed button (for MySpace or blogs) to copy the html you need for your CBC Radio 3 Player.

How Do I Choose Only One Track to Play in My CBC Radio 3 Player?

To play only one track in your Facebook embedded player, simply mouse over the track that is playing in the media player, and click on the envelope symbol. A window will appear with the permalink. For MySpace or blog, just hit the embed button, and copy the html.

Having Problems? With the player I mean...

If you are having problems with your player, or want to let us know what you think, please send an email with the subject line "Media Player" to:

    Nice!

Geez guys, you are always on the ball!

I added on Facebook a week or so, and I love it, however when it's on the left side of the page it doesnt display right but it still works

Now if only the ability to arrange the songs was fixed ;) it's not fun to set a song as the top song on the playlist but somehow it ends up on the bottom of the playlist or somewheres random. Keep up the good work!

    Reordering songs on Facebook

Silvorgold, just to clarify, we don't have a mechanism yet to allow users to save any reordering of songs from within facebook, due to certain technical limitations.

Glad you're using the player, keep the feedback coming everyone!

    flaw with facebook

I think this an amazing application. but everytime you try to load someone else's profile or even go to write on someone's wall you lose the song you were listening to. So if you could make the application detachable (like it is on the site) it would make the application much more user friendly.
    Thanks

    Sweet!

You guys are brilliant. Life is good outside the box.

I'm hoping there is or will be a setting to turn off the auto-play.

    managing playlists

I also have the app added in facebook - which is superfabawesome!

but what i think Silvorgold is referring to is the overall usabilty of the player from this site itself. it is indeed a pain in the bottom re-ordering songs...

but i still love you and am totally up for a dance party! :)

I wish i was as cool as Radio3.

I just started doing my own R3 Song of the Minute on my Facebook profile, with links to the song, but now this will make it so much better. Seriously. Cool. If I were as cool as R3, I'd have many supermodel girlfriends and even supermodel dogs, cats and microwaves. Go R3!

    Feedback

Indeed it can be a pain to reorder and remove songs from playlists. I have tried to delete several songs several times and yet they show up the next day. Reordering seems to be random - I have yet to find a pattern to it. It would be great if we could reorder playlists on a regular HTML webpage or have a 'Save Changes' button on the flash player itself.

Other than that, though, it is great. Keep up the good work.

    autoplay

I really want this on my blog but can't subject my subscribers to the AUTOPLAY. It's rude. It will drive away my viewers. You don't want that, do you? I'll end up single and alone.

    Agree with eep.

Like Eep, I think it's a great idea to be able to post the R3 player elsewhere. And I do agree with others that reordering songs could be improved (although I'll leave that techie stuff to you). And lastly, I agree that the player would be ridiculously better if you were able to run around facebook or at least have others looking at various parts of your profile (photos, friends, etc) without the music stopping - delinking would be great if it's possible.
Anyway, most importantly - good idea. Keep up the good work.
    Cheers,

    Awesome feature!

I love the new feature. I've just dropped it into my Blog, and I will see how it goes.

I would love to be able to set the default for the player so that it would only play if a user decided to press play.

Anyway, here is the link to mine:

    Thanks!

I had left Facebook for months but HAD to reactivate my account tonight when I found out about this new feature. I will now gladly share my playlist with friends, new and old. Thanks R3!

    love it.

This is better than all the other Facebook applications put together... even the "vibrating hamster" app. :P

One thing I'd love to see in the future (not neccesary, just something that would be SO cool if possible) would be some sort of auto-shuffle o the songs played in a different order every time, and frequent visitors to my page wouldn't get sick of Frog Eyes before they ever got as far down my list as The Saffron Sect.

No real complaints though! Move over guys, I'm joining the Dance Party!

Embedded player auto play can be disabled

The Bison, we just added new code to allow auto play to be enabled or disabled, your choice.

Add the following code at the end of where your playlist exists in your embed code (in two places):

    &autoplay=false

That will keep the player from playing automatically.

Or even easier, load the playlist your want on the R3 site, and then click the embed button.

We have that code in there now, and change autoplay to be false.

The autoplay fix just made some a personal hero

Every Monday [or Tuesday] now the Radio3 player will allow me to successfully deliver my more music mondays post at www.aquietrevolution.com*
    For that I thank you!

*it focuses on Halifax>NS>East Coast - but anything is fair game.

    Random off/on?

Great job with the media player! I love it. It would be nice, however, if there were a way to toggle shuffle/random play with a parameter, similar to the way one can toggle autoplay with a parameter. That way the player won't start up with the same song every time. Thoughts?

Re: The CBC Radio 3 Player Is Now Embeddable

Thanks! We're actually working on a few more features which will go live in the coming weeks, but I'm not sure a feature like this is on the list. At least not right now. We have so many things we want to build into it, that whatever we do, we want to make sure that it's easy to use.

    We shall see!

    Web Radio?

How do I switch my embedded player from just playing the music-only feed to playing the "live" web radio, like the main R3 page does?

It seems like the embedded player doesn't exist anymore. What happened? There's a gaping whole in my blog where Radio3 used to be.
