Podcast #117: Rewind '80s

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Aug 17, 2007
We listened to music on vinyl and then cassette. Punk died the first of many deaths. New Wave was born. D.O.A. invented "hardcore". Chris Kelly was born. Hair-Metal took up residency in the stadiums of the earth. Brave New Waves and Nightlines ruled the late night airwaves on CBC Radio. I lost my virginity.

Yes, it all happened in the 1980s.

This week, another extremely special Rewind edition of the CBC Radio 3 podcast, celebrating Canada's independent music of the Rubik's Cube decade.

Music scenes were separated by mountain ranges, prairies and the Canadian Shield, with no internet or Facebook to unite them, only a postage stamp and a rotary phone.

For the first time ever, CBC Radio 3 unites Canada's independent music of the 1980s all in one place. This is history. From the glitter punk of Vancouver's Slow to the lost genius of Calgary's Color Me Psycho, to the Hamilton party-rock of Teenage Head and Toronto's misunderstood synth-pop prodigies Blue Peter, it's all here in one playlist!

We'll also have a Canadian Dictionary with DOA, an Occupational Hazard with the Modernettes and an interview with Gerard Van Herk of Og Records and Deja Voodoo. So whether this show serves as a reminder or an introduction, we hope you enjoy hitting REWIND!

    Neon alert!

I'm looking forward to this Rewind, although I must admit I'm about to learn a lot about Canadian indie history with this 80s show. As you said Grant, the 90s was a flashback for me but this one's going to have to fill the gaps between my 80s listening station which was basically whatever Mom & Dad were still listening to (pretty good, Blondie, CCR, & The Doors) and whatever Casey Kasem told me to like. Ya Mister Mister!

    Wow!

At times my sheltered US life comes shining through... like today. While running and listening to your podcast I was introduced to the kind of music that ruled my teens. It was such a weird, but neat thing. I grew up on the Ramones, Jot, Zero Boys, Toxic Reasons, Sloppy Seconds, DK, and the like.

I especially liked Slow...I'm going to have to dig deeper into some of the music heard on this show.

Podcasting is such a beautiful thing.

runnin from the bangers after the youth dance

a few years a go in thailand my wife and i were accosted in a very friendly manner by this boomer american couple. it was a very small boat so there was no real escape. at one point they asked me, quite seriously, what music i listened to in '80s because everything they heard was such shit.

it occurred to me, since i spent the 80s listening to the stuff you're playing here, that good music is always around, just sometimes you have to look harder to find it. i'm grateful that it's easier to find now. i keep wondering what kind of listenership any one of a number of bands i've known / been in might have garnered had we had a radio 3, or even if regular cbc had given two shits.

    thanks

    Lickin' their way to DIY

    Man.

How the heck did they ever get that stuff to us back in the days of bricks and mortar boards?

I remember rummaging around in a weird delete bin in Townsville Australia, circa 1985, and coming up for air with a copy of World War 3.

The kid at the counter was absolutely flabbergasted that DOA was still going.....

    Ha!

(great series Mr. L. et al.)
