A week or so ago, we hit the road, on our way to Alberta to play a few shows.
Now there's no better way to get to know someone than to spend 3 days in a van with them. And, for anyone who's ever been on tour, you'll know that one thing that begins to develop over the course of a few days are these sort of "inside jokes", these silly things that just make you crack up and usually make everyone else look at you like: what the heck is so funny guys??!!
One of the few running jokes we had going was a character that Bob Kemmis came up with called: "Guy who lives in a cave". This is a guy who has none of the most common cultural references and the best part is anyone can take on this character. So, we had just stopped at a Tim Horton's to get some late night snacks and we're waiting in line and Bob says very seriously: "I've never been to one of these before - what do they have here?" We looked at him with suspicion and disbelief and then all of a sudden, it hit us: Guy who lives in a cave!! We all cracked up.
Of course it's not only the jokes that create the bond between fellow travelers. Music can do that as well. When we were all tired of talking and laughing that night, we took turns putting on CDs. At some point, I put on the album Philadelphia by Museum Pieces. It was mesmerizing actually and I remember that one song seemed to engage the sleepy passengers in particular. The van went so quiet all of a sudden, that I thought everyone was asleep but when I checked, all eyes were open. And so were all ears apparently.
Here's that song.
