It Might Be A Very Good Year…

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Mar 01, 2007
Chris Kelly, CBC Radio 3's resident sparkplug, has a theory that the greatest Canadian music comes out during the ‘odd' years of the decade... 2003... 2005... and yes, 2007.

As usual, I scoffed at his concept, telling him that one jaw-dropping Arcade Fire album does not a great year in Canadian music make. Then I started poking around the web, talked to a few people here and there, and realized that Chris may be onto something.

Here are ten Canadian albums from an amazing array of cross-country talent that are all scheduled to be released in 2007:

March 6 - The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
March 13 - Cadence Weapon - Breaking Kayfabe (Epitaph Records release)
April 17 - The Joel Plaskett Emergency - Ashtray Rock
May 1 - Feist - The Reminder
May 15 - Rufus Wainwright Release The Stars
May 15 - Hot Hot Heat "Happiness Ltd."
June 12 - Immaculate Machine "Immaculate Machine's Fables"
July - Tegan and Sara
August - New Pornographers
September - Islands (tentative)
October - The Weakerthans (tentative)

It's an all-star list, and includes three of my top five Canadian bands, but I would also love to see new (and overdue) records from Wolf Parade, Cuff The Duke, and Wintersleep. Any others we are forgetting? Which album release are you looking forward to the most?

I heard that the new Novillero album got pushed back to early '08, but if they have new tracks they should put them up on newmusiccanada so we can podcast them! Didn't realize that Reverie Sound Revue was still an active band!??!

    ELIZABETH - FIRST EXCOMMUNICATIONS - MARCH 20TH

    ELIZABETH - FIRST EXCOMMUNICATIONS - MARCH 20TH

I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE FOR MONTHS. THEY HAVE 5 OR 6 TRACKS ON THEIR NMC PAGE AND THEY ARE WICKED GOOD.

    Not a NMC band..

but Grady's coming out with their new album in time for SXSW, still have to see them perform someday, and each time Johnson's Big Sugar performed, I was either sick or unable to go each time, same with his Grady band.

a couple that have already been released...

We'll already this year we have new, brilliant records from Julie Doiron and Do Make Say Think.......and I thought I heard something about a new Final Fantasy record, possibly with Beirut???? and what about a new record from Caribou, it seems like he should be having something come out soon. This year does indeed seem like it will be a great year for music.

you're right, I think we can expect a new Final Fantasy record in the fall but it may not be until January 08... both Julie's record and Do Make Say Think are very good, as was the February release of the Apostle Of Hustle!

I'll advance the theory that every year is going to be a great year for music release now that we got Globocorp record companies out of the way… Cause 2006 was no year to ignore either!

    Scott Merritt

Waiting for another Scott Merrit album, of course. The last one took 8 years! Then again, it was worth it. There is simply no better music being made in English Canada today than by this wholly underrated man.

    Not NMC but somewhat Canadian

Amon Tobin may be more of an international vagabond than Canadian independant musician, but i bet his album coming out this month called 'Foley Room' is going to kick ass. While he may not be an NMC artist, he apparently lives in Montreal, so why not throw it out there... and what's with all the Canadian music put out on labels that aren't very big, but not NMC... is there a category for this type of music?? I vote for "calling it "Kindy"music, as in "Kinda Indy". So there.

this year will be awsome! For some reason I had yet to hear about Hot Hot Heat and Immaculate Machine!
And of course I'm VERY highly awaiting Neon Bible
I'm waiting for something new from Tokyo Police Club! Their EP was too short! What, was it like 17 minutes total?!

    Great Year

I'm looking forward to so much on the main list, and other bands from the comments, but currently topping my list is the new Chromeo album due out in May.

    the west, the west

My most anticipated 2007 releases are definitely Maybe Smith's new recored "Animals & Architects" and Carbon Dating Service's "Polyentendrii". Saskatoon's got some of the sweetest indie rock going these days. True Story.

    yes, yes, and yes

these are all great picks! neuromancer, good news: the new Basia Bulat (who is a rising female singer songwriter from London ON) will be in our next podcast, as will a NEW song (well, to Canada anyway) from the band that might prove to be the sleeper success story of 2007: Tokyo Police Club from Newmarket, Ontario.

    Loscil's rubies

I spoke with Scott Morgan when Destroyer played DC last year and he'd said a collaboration was coming out. This might count as last year's release, but a double vinyl version of Destroyer's Rubies is out now and the fourth side is Loscil's Rubies - a 23min track. Morgan just made reference to this on his website this month. Hope they bring their two styles together more often.

P.S. If you want some cool ring tones, Loscil has a few you can download here: http://www.toneshared.com/

If you want an endangered species ringtone, you can go here: http://rareearthtones.org/ringtones/

If you hate mobile phones as I do, but need to own one anyway, here's a way to put some good use to them: (Spread the word of CBCRadio3!)

Re: It Might Be A Very Good Year…

I'm looking forward to a new Constantines album this year...but that may not happen until 2008. Other Canadian acts releasing albums this year that I'm looking forward to (and haven't been mentionned yet) include Jim Bryson, the Acorn, and Hayden? (long overdue).
