Juno Nominees Announced

Posted by John Paolozzi on Feb 06, 2007
Let the bitching begin! We've officially entered the season of "Juno-ary" with today's announcement of the nominees for 2007. Taking place on April 1st, this year's Juno Awards will be hosted by Nelly Furtado, who incidentally, is up for a few awards herself. Won't it be awkward if she doesn't win anything?

Every year the Junos come under fire for favouring commerce over critical acclaim, but there's always hope right? Scattered in amongst the many nominees are a number of the artists you're likely to hear on Radio 3 including K-os, Sarah Harmer, Ron Sexsmith, Classified, Matt Mays, Chad VanGaalen, Islands, Malajube, Shout Out Out Out Out, Sam Roberts, Sloan, Champion, The Be Good Tanyas, The Duhks, The Wailin' Jennys Sound Bluntz, Arabesque, and Tiga. junos eh?

that list is really too bad. they left off some really great stuff and nominated some stuff that doesn't deserve to be recognized (hedley). i'm happy for chad vangaalen though.

It's time to allow Francophone bands for band/album of the year! Even if anglo teenyboppers (is there still such thing?) won't listen to their music.

John, where did you find that pic? Who *is* that kid? Context?

    Curious.

    Context eh.... hmmm.

First a little bit of background... When the announcement came from the Junos, and I went to the site to mine images... the media section required me to apply for accreditation, but this would take too long, so we came up with the idea of a kid looking like he was "frozen out" (as many artists feel), and then we threw in the wheat, because the event takes place in Saskatoon.

    It was a long day.

    Re: Juno Nominees Announced

The theme to the show is supposedly (atleast when it was announced a year or 2 ago) was Runnin' back to Saskatoon, so maybe we'll see the Burton Cummings' Moustache Band performing.

"Burton Cummings' Moustache" would be an awesome name to a song or band

    Burton Cummings' Moustache

Actually "Burton Cummings' Moustache" is a common euphemism for "pubic hair". Just kidding.

    the real awards

I still think the Junos should do SOMETHING unpredictable and throw a dark horse into the "Group Of The Year" category like Malajube, but then again I guess that's why awards like the Buckys and Polaris exist eh?

    Re: Juno Nominees Announced

hopefully next year after Neon Bible comes out the Arcade Fire will have a few nominations.
I would also like to see Tokyo Police club nominated for something, but oh well.
At least K-os is on the list, as well as Malajube and Chad Vangaalen and Islands.

    Hmm...

    ...still somewhat uninspiring nominations.
Where is Tokyo Police Club or The Fembots?
And Jets Overhead for Best New Band? They've been around since '95 as The Special Guests, and about four years as Jets Overhead (and a handful of album).
All I can say is hmm...

    best "new" band

That category is always the one that can be embarrassing. I remember when Green Day won best new rock band at the Grammys several years ago after they had been a band for ten years and had put out three albums. I think you can only be considered a "new" band if your album finally becomes available at Walmart.
