Sometimes Change Is Good

At this point, if I were you, I'd be suspicious that somebody was trying to trick me into eating something weird, so I'll come straight to the point. As of mid- March, we will no longer be doing the Saturday Night Show on CBC Radio Two.

For months now, a great deal of work has gone into rethinking CBC's radio offerings, and here's how it's all going down. Radio One focusing more on news, and talk. Radio Two will expand its jazz and contemporary classical music programming to include a greater percentage of Canadian artists, and add more arts reporting. And Radio 3, ever scouting out new frontiers, will continue to push the envelope on the web and satellite.

At first, feelings around the office were mixed about the decision, but being the sorts who always try to make a dollar out of 25 cents, we saw a silver lining. The Saturday Night Show was a lot of work to produce, so with this off our shoulders, we can finally start working on projects that until now we just haven't had the resources to tackle. Without revealing too much (or painting ourselves into a corner), I can tell you that this will involve a new website design that will allow us to better deliver much of the content currently only available on satellite, as well as a number of new podcasts.

Sometimes change is good. That's our story anyway, and we're sticking to it.

For more info the changes to CBC Radio, go here.

Oh man, my Saturday night date......

Last weekend I was merely stood up, as of mid-March I will have been re-soundly dumped!

    I'm really psyched!

I'm looking forward to the change! I always felt that the show was kinda wedged in there in the wee hours. This is a great way to make the music (ahd the programs) more accessible.

Kudos for forward thinking! I can't wait to see what's in store on the new site.

    Well done guys!

    Re: Sometimes Change Is Good

Yah I caught that story this afternoon on the news site and wondered what affect it had on you. Being that I tune in on satellite it doesn't affect me. But I can tell you, when my year runs out, I most certainly will paying for this service and for one channel only. But I know lots of people that tune in on Saturdays to the radio, radio are now going to be considering more seriously, the satellite avenue… lest they miss out on the best thing on any air waves.

It will be harder maybe to get new Canadian listeners hooked in without the free Saturday nights, but then again people should really get off their asses and pitch a song for the R3-30 like I did.

What am I saying? Who (ever) knows? I guess I am just glad you guys are excited about this as it means good things are coming for leeches like me.

    Satellite Home Kit!

tb3, have you been able to find a home kit for your radio?? I have had no success in Winnipeg, and have a Sirius sales rep looking for one for me.

Guess I'll have to take my bottle of wine and sit in the garage.......

    TRH,
I got the antenna home kit at Future Shop or Best Buy… but we got it maybe a couple weeks after we got the unit in October. I don't know what there stock is like these days.

But if you want to feel better I was moving the entertainment center a couple weeks ago to do some wiring for our new PVR, and I ripped the antenna cable in half when it got stuck under the entertainment center.

    no more saturday night!?

wow...i must admit this this really has come as bad news to me. Grant's saturday night show and the R3 30 on radio 2 are sometimes the only highlight in my otheriwise boring weeks.
Its a sad thing, since i dont have a satellite radio the only radio 3 I'll have now is the podcst
oh well, maybe the new site will bring good things...

    change

I remember when the cbcradio3.com webpage v1.0 went down, I was very upset. No more weekly magazines, chock full of photo art and cool new canadian music.

    I was very distraught.

Then along came v.2.0, with the 24hr music feed, and the podcasts. I got over it pretty quickly.

I hope good things are in store, because I will miss the radio show (mostly in the summer, when there isn't hockey to watch). Looks like I'm gonna have to get me a satellite radio. I got a request for the R3-30 all planned out...

    hmmmm...

As of right now, I have a Sirius radio that doesn't work, and I have no idea whether the radio's broken or the transmission signal actually doesn't reach where I live. Sounds like I'm really going to have to get my ass in gear to resolve the problem, because life without Grant and Craig and Lauren on my radio would suck badger pellets...

    Let's see

Although I'll miss the current R1&R2 programming, I'm sure whatever it's replaced with will be quality. However, I am disappointed about R3 moving exclusively to satellite (I do realize there's tonnes of content on the R3 website with probably more to come, which I'm grateful for, but there currently are still limits to the content that can be streamed).

I tried satellite, but I couldn't handle the poor 32-64kbps audio quality. I loved R3 satellite content, but the audio quality didn't nearly cut it. When this improves I'll buy satellite, but not before.

Overall I'm looking forward to seeing what all comes out of these changes. I'm confident that in the end I won't be disappointed.

Luke, by chance have you ever tried R3 through iTunes? I use a Mac at home, and so push the audio through my AirPort, and onto my stereo. Radio 3, and the countless other stations all sound great. To be honest... I don't remember the last time I listened to terrestrial radio. Probably 2 years ago when the last stero was ripped off outta my truck.

    Thanks!

I can’t begin to tell you how much all these great comments are appreciated. Although the loss of Saturday night is sad, we’re really excited to launch some new programming ideas that all of you will be able to access 24/7 on the web. I’m glad to hear that most of you sound excited, too (Zoom, based on your comment, we'll be scheduling a staff screening of In Her Shoes ASAP).
And even though this new programming will be free and you won’t have to subscribe to Sirius to get it, based on some of your thoughts I’m reading here, we might just have to give away a few more satellite radios before mid-March. Start working on those R3-30 requests! :-)
Thanks for your amazing support and stay tuned for more details…

Ya see… this is why I love the place!

Lurkie-loos and commenters here, take notice, Steve Pratt takes time out to read and consider all that you are saying here. For those that don't know, he's the head hauncho for CBC Radio 3.

It says a lot about how they value the listener, when they consider your thoughts and opinions, and take a moment to cast a light on the behind the scenes, especially considering the demands that he has on his plate at any one point during the day. Or any of the personalities here. It's why I love this joint. Sans the ivory tower I'm used to.

And because he has lug around those huge balls (yah, I'm dusting that oldie but goodie off).

I was wondering Steve, when I saw the comments here and on the Inside the CBC blog, that a lot of people like they've lost some of their favourite part of the traditional radio, if there is any value in a petition? I mean, I think in some ways they may have driven away that younger demographic they are trying to attract with these changes…

I guess that's not a fair question to ask of you. So… anyone else here reading? Are you bothered enough by the decision, that you'd sign a petition?

Even though I can tune in on Sirius, I still feel like I just lost a good friend… even if there is a new, cooler more robust one, on it's way.

Anyway, thanks for taking time out, and thanks for all the work. Especially you, John, who I envision running around like Steve Balmer right now, sweating and yelling "Developers! Developers! Developers!" while you get them building the new R3 Hub.

Today's diatribe brought to you, by the letters I put up there ^. Sorry about that.

    Trying to be postive

I am trying to be optimistic about the future of independent Canadian music on CBC and the plans for new content but I will miss Saturday evenings playing board games and listening to Grant or the hosts that have been in that slot before him. Does anyone else remember Real Time with Leora Cornfeld or David Wisdom's Night Lines with Grant's occasional calls from the road with the Smugglers.

Brave New Waves got me through a lot of graveyard shifts in the early 90's but I haven't listened in years so maybe a change needs to happen.

I had a Sirius radio last year and listened to Radio 3 90% of the time, so I might have to get another radio.

Now I'm anxious to hear more about the plans and hope I enjoy the new podcasts as much as the current.

    BNW

Yeah, there was no specific mention of BNW in the announcement, but I'm guessing the 12-1 slot on R2 will at least stay put?

... well, I *was*, anyway, until I checked in with that show's guest host of late Helen Spitzer: http://cleverlazy.blogspot.com/2007/01/so-long-brave-new-waves.html

    Say it ain't so!

As for R3, I will def. miss the Sat. show too. One of my fave things about the time slot was listening while I got ready for a Saturday night out, then again in the car or when I got home if it was before 3 (or 4, w. sometimes-podcast-broadcast). Then again, R3-On-Demand should be some pretty good times. I can pretty much do the same thing but with a pause button.

That said, I'll miss segments like Canadian Rock n' Roll Trivia and Grant's Ma calling in from the Stones concert and such.

All in all, though, I'm confident R3 will survive in its own fine style. Thanks for all your work.
  28. Toque
    28

    er ...

Of course, the 10-1 slot on R2 would cover the BNW slot. Dang. It *is* so. Where have you gone, Patti Schmidt-i-o?

the comments here and on Inside the CBC say it all: the kidz may or may not go for all this.

When I heard the newscast announcing pending changes I was excited - I was hoping to hear Radio 3 was getting it's own channel. How dissapointing :(. CBC should increase the Cdn indie content on Radio2, or create a stand-alone radio 3 channel, something akin to Australia's Triple J but perhaps more Canadian and less Australian.

Looks like it'll be back to listening to cassettes when I work on the boat I'm building in the garage.

In the meantime, keep up the great stuff Radio 3!

    Pawistik:

CBC Radio 3 does have our own channel! It's Sirius satellite radio channel 94 - you can listen to it anywhere in North America - in your boat, in your car, on your bike, in your home. In Alaska, Alberta, or Arkansas, CBC Radio 3 is on Sirius 94. I am hosting live on Sirius 94 RIGHT NOW! Playing Sam Roberts this second, then Destroyer, then Islands, then Malajube, then Tegan and Sara, then NoMeansNo, then the Gruesomes, then Do Make Say Think, then into an interview with the No Luck Club about the Chinese Head Tax!

You can WIN satellite radios with subscriptions easily through our trivia show this Saturday night on Radio Two (our last Saturday show will be March 17) or through the R330 Fridays and Saturdays!!

    Ouch

So it is true.. One of the ONLY reasons why I bought an FM device for my iPod was so that I COULD listen to CBC Radio 3 on Saturday nights.

G'luck with everything, For those who don't have satellite radios (or have only an XM) (Read: poor university students, etc), you should do some of the broadcast via live feeds or whatnot like cbc.ca/listen does (I mean for R3-30.. there's still the podcast, duh!)

I'll be sad when it's off the radio.

I'm serious. It's really easy to win one. Craig Norris makes it pathetically easy every Saturday night, and if you know your Canadian music trivia, there's a big chance of winning this Saturday between 730pm and 9pm with myself too! Whoo!

yes, yes i know change is good

Sigh...I was wondering what would finally motivate me to spend the extra cash to do the satellite radio thing. No more Radio 3 on the regular (ie. free) station? Yep, that'd do it. I really really hope that a lot of streaming content is offered on the web though, because seriously if I could listen to Radio 3 all day at work I would just about be as happy as the proverbial clam. Right now I rely on KCRWmusic.org (which btw if you don't already know is a pretty kickin community radio station from Santa Monica, CA, with 24-hr web streaming) but would I rather listen to Canadian music on the web all day long? Hell ya!

    But Siriusly

While I am sad to see the show go, I am more glad to see Freestyle disappear from the AM side. God, I hate that show.

I didn't buy a home kit for my Sirius Radio - I just use the car antenna, running along the bottom of a window. Pick up a generic cigarrette lighter > standard plug adaptor and a headphone jack > RCA adaptor, and you're in business. I got both at 'The Source' for about $20.

As for sound quality, I'm not sure if it varies by location, but mine is great. Much, much better and cleaner than FM radio.

    Re: Sometimes Change Is Good

I don't like where the CBC is going, Lately it seems to be changing things that were cutting edge, for examples like ZeD and now CBC radio 3 have or will be taken off the air. These shows may have been time consuming, but by moving them to the satellite radio and online, your taking what the CBC is supposed to do away. The CBC is supposed to be there to broadcast Canadian content to Canadians. I think by doing this their eliminating the "youth market" the CBC seems to desperately want.
  44. Dave
    44

    Rats!

Well, I have to say, I'm disappointed. My car antenna is broken (always retract your antenna when going through a car wash) and I only have a tape player (all my music is on CDs & mp3s), and CBC is the only decent thing to come through. It's been a highlight for me, having Radio 3 on Saturday nights as a break from my Sgt. Pepper's cassette AGAIN.

But, what are these new podcasts you're talking about? MORE Canadian music? Are you going to separate them more by genre? A Roots Music podcast, maybe? Hmmm???

I, too, love KCRW, as well as KEXP and, KPSU from Portland, Oregon. As a displaced Portlander, currently living in Canada (I married a Canadian), I do a weekly radio show that airs on KPSU and also goes out as a podcast. If you like Radio 3, you'll also probably like my show. Check it out at postmodernrock.com
  45. tb3
    45

Ya know… the more I think 'bout this...

The more I think it's not entirely bad. Perhaps even mildly to moderately great. And, it doesn't change much for me.

The shows that were shuffled, cancelled or changed on R1 and R2, as 'me-centric' as this sounds… I didn't listen to them that much so it doesn't affect me like it is others. What matters to me is Radio 3. And as far as I am concerned, I haven't lost anything. I might perhaps be gaining on this when the dust settles.

At work I stream R3 through iTunes and other than Barmitzvah Brothers stalling the stream (yes, John it still does that) every time for some strange reason, it is perfect. In the car I tune in on the FREE Sirius Player (it is entirely too easy to win one, so you have no excuse to not be listening FREE for a year). And at home I have the home kit. Saturday nights I was listening in on that… I think it's actually been a while since I tuned in to that show on the celestial airwaves. And when my free subscription runs out, I will be paying for one. Yes, JUST for channel 94. Because I value you the content that much. And because in some way I feel like it's giving back for all the stuff they give. And even one penny of my Sirius subscription goes back to Radio 3, then it makes me happy.

    I've lost nothing.

When you think of things like See Vous Play and how much it cost to attend (my ticket cost me $0.00), perhaps you get an appreciation for type of money it costs to run an operation as such. And maybe the idea of paying for the content through Sirius won't hurt so much. And then, you add in where they are taking this website to, in the very near future, and consider that all of that content costs you all of $0.00, and perhaps you will start to appreciate that we the listener are really losing nothing, and gaining all that much more.

And the bands… they won't be losing anything either. How could they?? The exposure, the airplay, and NMC nucleus for them to promote themselves – that all costs them nothing. And give gives gives.

So if John (et crew) maintain that this change is positive, and that it's going to make a web presence that is already pretty great in my opinion, better, then I think I am inclined to agree. Cause I can't think of one thing in the last year that they have been wrong about (well… maybe picking me as Fan of the Year). SO my trust is that in corporate business speak, this is going to be a win-win synergistic value-add for you and me and everyone we know.

So... eff the idea that this decision needs to be protested or petitioned.

Now get to working on rollin' tha new chit out!

    Re: Sometimes Change Is Good

tb3 - couldn't have put it better myself (can anyone doubt the decision to bestow 'Fan of the Year' on him?).
We are indeed digging in already to get going on the new stuff, and although it's not ALL going to happen at once, you should see (read: hear!) some of it soon.
I feel very lucky to be at Radio 3 - it's pretty rare that when you get served a lemon or two that you've got an entire team of expert lemonade-makers.
Yikes - I'm getting maudlin and beginning to use cheap metaphors and cliches, so before I further embarrass us, I willl just say thank you again to everyone for the great thought put into these comments - this is the most commented upon blog item we've ever had and it's greatly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the new stuff soon!

    More R3 content?

I work from home and listen to R3 pretty much all day long. My only criticism so far is that a lot of content gets repeated, forcing me to dig through the other 18,000 channels to find something decent to listen to.

I hope there are plans to develop more content in the future. If I have to listen to Lisa Christiensen interview Stephen Merrit one more time, I might throw my radio out the window.

    Re: Sometimes Change Is Good

While I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic that these changes will be good (and hopefully great) I have to second the comment by rouge: if the Ceeb is trying to increase the number "of younger and more diverse listeners representative of Canada," in order to "guarantee that the audience is sustainable over the long term," as stated in the Jan. 17 article, I am not sure that removing programming that appeals to your younger, non-traditional CBC2 listeners, such as CBC3 and BNW (and ZeD on tv) is really helping the cause. Hopefully all kinds of awesome new programming will fill the gap but the loss of CBC3 on CBC2 will be a blow. (I am glad to hear that Fuse will still be on, because that is an absolutely amazing show)

It really sucks that I won't be able to tune into cbc3 after march, being sans-sirius, but i am hoping that your new online material will make up for it. And I really hope that you will not be alienating the audience that you have built up. Here's to change - please don't screw it up.

    How young is young?

Some posts here refer to the "younger demographic" being alienated from the CBC. As the mother of a 20 and 23 year old, I can tell you that radio is not on their generation's radar screen in ANY way! They were raised on CBC, they listen in the car with me, they do NOT tune in! I raised this with GL, as I feel it is an obstacle for satellite radio to overcome. He pointed out that podcasting is aimed at this group. They are a generation raised on technology, and through their computers is how they can be reached.

THR, Can you tell me more about these things you call "com-poo-ters"? I hear they're the wave of the future.

I have to agree with Grant. The vehicle the kids are going to load up in and come in droves will be the podcast. Hell, it's how I ended up here. iTunes launches podcast capability one day and one of the top ten ones was this CBC podcast and I subscribed and have slowly infected my way through all the R3 offerings since. The podcast is still a dedicated part of every morning at the gym.

    A Sincere Thank-You. Honestly!

I want to jump in here and tell you all that I appreciate your words about The R3-30. The show is a whole hell of a lot of fun to put together, and I'm honoured by the fact that you're turning your ears to it.

It inspires me to do a way better job on the show. Not a good job, mind you. Just a better job. Which, if you're a regular listener, you know won't be hard.

    And, lean in close...(hushed whipser)
Keep your ears peeled for an R3-30 inspired podcast, very soon!

    Change is good?

How can taking away Saturday Night Radio 3 POSSIBLY be good?

    Re: Sometimes Change Is Good

I hear ya allycat. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to sell the change as "double-plus-good", because it does leave people who enjoy the terrestrial radio option out in the cold, BUT seeing as most of our audience is already online, it at least leaves us with some very good alternatives.

In a few weeks, we'll be conducting an online poll to gauge how you guys use Radio 3, and see help us decide what direction to take things.

    Getting maudlin myself ...

My mind is going a mile a minute reading all of these comments, and I have so many things to say!

But, seeing as I get to talk on-air 5 nights a week, I'll try to keep this post succinct, and just add a little through-the-grapevine information I have heard.

It sounds like part of the changes happening on R2 will include featuring more music from all of the amazing artists listed at New Music Canada.

More exposure for Canadian musicians is good for us all.

So make sure to tell your friend's cousin's band to sign up. NMC is only getting bigger and better.

    Vive le CBC Radio 3!

    Vive le CBC Radio 3!

I hope enough people email CBC to change their minds. Not every listener of CBC 2 is middle aged and a pseudo Frasier Crane. Like the people here!

more bitching from a certain demographic...

I'm simply unimpressed with all the changes, and the process behind those changes, at CBC. A management person summed up the situation by saying too many listeners are over 65, and not enough are over 35. Well, I fall exactly in the middle of those demographics; do these changes speak for me? Saturday night on CBC was always a cool place to be; apparently not any more. Yes I listen on my computer now and again, but for several decades I have considered tuning in to your programming to be a worthwhile thing to do. Apparently I don't feel that way any more. Hearing jazz and BNW as I went to bed was a big thing for me; not anymore. Obviously, due to changing demographics, I now want to hear jazz at dinnertime. And I like good music of all kinds; I don't need governments legislating the percentage of Canadian content. Also, the experts and number crunchers say I don't want to hear The World At Six, or any newscast longer than 2-3 minutes, anymore. And so on... Catering your programming to people who don't actually listen to you is process perhaps fraught with peril, I think. And stereotyping or pigeon-holing the listeners you do have is kinda insulting and limiting. A CBC official said in effect that audience ratings don't matter, demographics are more important. Since I have many alternatives to listening to the CBC, those words might come back to haunt her.

Ok there must be a good reason why...

...why Channel 94 (ie. the Radio 3 satellite channel) is not available as part of Sirius' internet radio options. I got excited because I thot I could buy an online subscription as an alternative to buying an actual radio and then a subscription too (I know, I know, you give the radios away all the time and they're easy to win. I should probably just try one of these days) but then I realized that my favourite channel would not be available via Sirius internet radio anyway. Is there a reason here that I'm missing? Is this in the works now that you're going off the free airwaves? Curious and a little confused but still your loyal fan, I remain...

Re: Ok there must be a good reason why...

No internet streaming for Channel 94? Wow..

CBC3 should get web streaming of the shows at least. I can listen to it on my computer, or i can hook my computer up to my stereo, or i can sit at school and listen on my laptop with headphones over the wireless. Wireless is becoming more abundant and more gadgets like cell phones are starting to support wifi. Even cars are working on this technology and there are entire cities going wireless.

Technologies are converging. Why not lead the way by offering web streams for the siriusly impaired!

    R3 Streaming

There are strong rumours that Radio 3's Sirius feed will be streaming soon, but no definitive date. However, it is only available to Sirius subscribers. We're working to make as much as possible of our best content available for free on our website. There most definitely be new, free online offerings before we leave Radio Two.

    The technological conceit

This blog is not representative of the listeners of Radio 3

    Consider this.

We are all on line. We all have access to the internet. And most of us seem to have some access that is high speed enough to get streaming audio. Many of us seem to be able to afford satellite radios, both the machine and the subscription.

We are not everyone. The voices missing on this list are those of people who cannot afford to access this technology, but still like to hear something more than classics, jazz or God help us all hit radio. Those who maybe don't live in big cities with a dynamic music scene so they can go out on Satuday nights to hear new bands. Some who would still like to tap in however briefly to the national new/alternative/indie music scene.

Radio 3 on Saturday nights was a short but substantial moment of connection; all you needed was an FM radio (and to be one of the 75% of Canadians within reach of an FM signal). And if you had a phone and could dial the toll free line, you could participate.

Now, that relatively free access is gone. People who are disenfranchised by global fetish of technology have just been further removed from a connection to their country.

No matter how you guys who produce the show justify it, you have to remember that you're trying to make the best out of a bad situation, but the situation cuts out a lot of people. The opportunities this change offers you will restrict much further people's access to what you do. What you're saying is if you can afford to listen to Radio 3 on line or on satellite, in some ways you will remain enfranchised. The rest can twist in the wind.

Oh, and your efforts will engorge a private company, that being the Satellite radio providers. So a public service is feeding the profits of private radio.

It seems to me that until March, "Cross Canada Checkup" and Radio 3 on Saturday nights were the only live coast-to-coast broadcasts on CBC? If so, something fundamental will be lost. A moment of connection to the country. The death of Radio 3 on broadband will be a very sad day, all bland justifications and rationalizations aside.

    Re: Sometimes Change Is Good

My parent's have no access to high speed internet, and would never spend the money for a satellite radio in a million years. So the only option if I wanted to listen to CBC3 at the moment at their place is on CBC2 on Galaxie on Bell Expressvu, and through FM, not everyone has high speed internet connection, lots of people still have 28.8k- connections sadly enough in this day and age.

I'd love to see a CBC3 webfeed personally though

Dang! Another great show leaving Radio Two. Nightlines, Radio On, and now Radio Three. I'll miss you! Fortunately I have long been capturing Radio3 off-air so now I will have an opportunity to dredge my archives. So long, Grant and all, it's been fun.
