Podcast #88 Taps Reversed

Posted by John Paolozzi on Jan 26, 2007
Ever have one of those nights where you dream like crazy, but it's nothing but chores? I spent the entire night dreaming about doing laundry, and doing it badly I might add. For one thing, I didn't have any change, and to make matters worse, the dryers seemed to be some sort of microwave, which was really bad for drying stuff. So what does this have to do with the podcast? Absolutely nothing, but I just thought you'd want to know.

This week's podcast barely made it in the can before Grant's sickly ass was kicked out of the building to recuperate from the killer bug he's been fighting for the past few weeks. Trooper that he is though, he's put together a solid podcast featuring the debut of husband and wife team, Christine Fellows and John K. Samson (The Weakerthans) as a duo, another instalment of Canadian Dictionary with Vancougar, and music from: The Memories Attack, land of talk, Knock Knock Ginger, The Pack, Junior Major, B.A. Johnston, Brad Sucks, The Fall Collection, Elizabeth, The Book of Lists, and Bionique.

    7-1? and Unfriendly Vancouver

Vancougar said that there are 7 single men per 1 single female in Vancouver! Where did that stat come from? No wonder I'm so useless meeting women in this town. That aside meeting new people in this pretentious cliquey town is a brutally difficult anyway. Why? In New York complete strangers come up and just start up a conversation about anything. Basically there you are innocent until proven guilty. In Vancouver you are guilty until proven (not homeless OR not asking for spare change OR not on drugs OR somebody with ties to my current circle of friends). OK skeptics how many new friends that you actually call and hang out with have you made in the last year or two? There's been plenty written on the friendly on the outside, standoffish on the inside nature of Vancouver people. Apparently Halifax and Calgary are ridiculously friendly and inclusive by default. That sounds refreshing as hell. Laid back West Coast my derriere. The drug problem has a lot to do with it obviously. Everyone so used to being confronted by freaks that they instantly dismiss anyone new attempting to make conversation with them. Paranoid? afraid? I've been in Vancouver for 27 years (since I was 11) and, having traveled a lot, the same thing has been bugging me since I was 17. A significant percentage of easterners who move here, move back to where they came from after a couple years cause socially Vancouver kinda sucks I guess. We can't even hold a Sea festival or Fireworks or First Night without meatheads screwing it up. Imagine if like The Red Hot Chili Peppers were to play on Robson Street like they did on Queen Street in Toronto. There'd be a riot and chaos and it would never happen again. Yeah Vancouver's got more social problems than it cares to admit... "but it's so beautiful…" - yawn… We're still a backwater of transients, like the miners, loggers and immigrant workers of the early part of last century…no so much interested in improving the social fabric of the town… No fun, not friendly city indeed. Yeah I know I could leave…but it's so beautiful... Quality relationships in life quickly oustrip places and things. Like money can't buy you happiness I guess (still don't believe that one). OK go out and prove me wrong.
