NMC Track of the Day for December 28th, 2006: Joel Plaskett “A Million Dollars”

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Dec 28, 2006
Since this is my last NMC pick of 2006, I thought I should go out with a bang and pick one of my very favourite tracks of 2006. This song is included in my Top 15 "Best Of" show that is currently airing on Sirius 94 throughout the holidays and will be released on the Best of 2006 Podcast tomorrow, but I won't let it slip as to where this song actually ranks in the Top 15... you'll have to listen to find that out.

But this bombastic tune, "A Million Dollars", by Halifax's son of song, Joel Plaskett, has come to mean a lot to me. It has become "that song"... years from now, I know I will always associate with the brilliant summer of 2006. Most of my summer months involved road-tripping, both with CBC Radio 3 and on personal vacation time, and this song usually accompanied me, blasting across my speakers.

Whether it was speeding down the switchback mountain road overlooking Dawson City, Yukon, or cresting the hill that reveals the serenity-inducing view of Desolation Sound BC, or revisiting childhood memories while circling Lake Echo, deep within Quebec's Laurentian Mountains, this song provided the sing-a-long soundtrack. And will all due respect to our Bucky winners, "let's get wrecked on Rolling Rock and stroll down to the sea" is my lyric of the year... it's Joel Plaskett at his best, taking us along for the ride, and the Canadian collective experience.

    I blame YOU, Grant!

Okay so my brothers about year ago got on a big "you need to listen to La De Da, John" and did I listen, no. But, then on Podcast #(insert number here), you played "Love This Town", expounding upon your love for the song, Grantimer. And for some reason, when it came from you, it sunk in. And then come See Vous Play I really learned why the world could use a lot more Joel Plaskett… as there is no 11 for this kid, you can always have more. So, thanks Grant, this pick is more fitting than you probably know.

As Canadian as 6am Saturday morning hockey…

    I blame Grant too!

I first heard Joel on the podcast on my ipod singing "Love this Town" as I walked across a major plaza in downtown Frankfurt. I'd just gotten off a plane from India and I was killing time before my flight to Calgary--and I had a huge smile on my face as I listened to this ode to Halifax. It was soooo Canadian and it took me home--even if home wasn't exactly Halifax.

I moved to Toronto this summer and was thrilled to be at See Vous Play and hear Joel and the band live! It was great to be in the audience and see so many people singing along--they knew all the words. Clearly I'd been missing the party. Glad I finally made it. Thanks for the invite!

    Now I blame Shaun!

I like your story Shaun, it's better than mine. However the common thread… J.Diddy Plaskett is what makes it all possible. Well… I guess CBC R3 figures in there too, since they fostered this love at an amazing event…

Tell me though, were you as thrilled (slash) scared by Johnny from Les Breastfeeders outfit (slash) antics as was I?

    Scared of Breastfeeders!?

I have to admit I got to See Vous Play half way through Les Breastfeeders set so I may have missed some of Johnny's antics--but what I saw was like watching an old Cramps concert video. I think I was too distracted by the 'act' to really get into it.

Les Trois Accord, however caught my attention. I'd heard them on the podcast but they were great live. The back and forth vocals were fun to watch and unlike Johnny they didn't seem to take themselves too seriously. They were having fun and it showed.

Anyone who wears a Yak vest scares me, I'm sorry…

Funny how the perspecdtives differ… as I thought the 3 Accords show was affected by the fact that the singer was fighting off some sort of plague… as their show was a little flat in terms of energy.

Musically I did like them (Grand Champion is in my year's best list). The Breastfeeders live show is as much about the performance as it is the music, but I really kind of dug the music. And I think the feeders de la boob, just about stole the show. Which says quite a bit considering they were up against JP.

At any rate, we all agree, 'we like music… especially the good kind'
