Canadian music fans receive compensation

Posted by MAK on Sep 22, 2006

Remember when Sony/ BMG was in hot water after some of their latest releases contained hidden copy-protection programs, that, when opened on your computer, would open up your system to hackers and viruses?

CBC.ca is reporting that an Ontario court has just approved a settlement deal which would see that those affected by the copy-protection programs would receive compensation of $8.40, a replacement CD and free downloads of selected CDs to hundreds of thousands of customers who bought the affected discs; approximately 80 thousand of them.

You will need to complete an application form, etc. Apparently it's on the Sony/ BMG website. (I cannot find it, if you can, please let me know).

The clencher to all of this is that this settlement is applicable to all residents of Canada, except those in Quebec and British Columbia. say what?

(Settlement approval hearings have been scheduled for Sept. 28 in Montreal and Sept. 29 in Victoria.)

    Claim suck

This deal sucks for consumers. We finally get to covert music to MP3s after year buying the CDs. Then you have to mail the UPC codes in. So you lending up paying for stamp, and time to do all this stuff. I will never buy a SONY/BMG product again.
