Dan Bejar from the band Destroyer has always been known for the stunning lyrics he writes. They're poetic, witty, surprising, and so packed with images, they should be playing in theatres.
I'm certainly not alone in that opinion. In fact, there are a bunch of websites that are devoted to the band's lyrics alone. There's a Destroyer lyrics Wiki. Another site pulls out random lines every time. And there's even a Destroyer drinking game. And earlier this year, Destroyer put out another whole album-worth of lyrics to try and figure out: Destroyer's Rubies.
So, for this two-part interview, I sat down with Dan Bejar and asked him about his lyrics, starting with first things first - how he likes to begin songs. Part II begins with Bejar talking about the opening track of the latest album, Rubies.
